Chapter Six
All I managed to do was lie there and stare at Dax as he slept. I rarely ever slept completely through the night and would lie awake for hours waiting for the sun to rise. That or I would begin my day extremely early. Hyde made it hard to sleep a lot between the nightmares and trying to hold her off if I could. I never knew when she would show up, but the warmth spreading through me followed by a chill was the only signal I usually had. Then the change in eye color and state of mind would take place. The change was so natural I hardly noticed it and it was like I, not Hyde, was the one inflicting the horror on these men that were unfortunate enough to end up in my room. Or in my bed. There was a hope in me that because I had satiated Hyde with not only a kill the night before, but a hardy meal, that she would leave us be tonight. Dax wasn’t a man I wanted to dismember and bleed on my table.
His eyelids fluttered just barely in his sleep, and his mouth was slightly parted. He didn’t snore. That I was thankful for. There were so many that did that you got tired of hearing the noise and wanted nothing more than to make it stop. Not with him and it was a relief. He was lying on his stomach, arms above his head cradling the pillow. I wasn’t sure what time we had gotten back to my place and how long I had been asleep, but I actually felt rested. Typically I wanted nothing to do with a man once we were done and he needed to stay on his side of the bed, but with him something was different. There was contentment there in those moments afterward that I couldn’t explain, and I didn’t even know the guy, but I did hope that Hyde would give me the chance to get to. A connection had been made in those late night hours entwined with each other. I wasn’t sure what that was all about, but it was something I wanted to explore further and, yes, that was highly unusual for me. After the death of my parents, I didn’t want those connections because I felt that those around me would always leave in one way or another. Maybe I was changing.
A feeling began to move over me. The warmth in my gut began to spread outwards, and as much as I tried to hold it in place the more it resisted, and fear began to climb up my throat. I knew exactly what this meant.
“No, no, no,” I started to whimper quietly, moving from the bed as quietly as I could. If anything, I would not be in the same room with him when she took over, but I would rather her not take over at all. I liked Dax and didn’t want him to be just another victim of that crazed half of myself.
